Day 30

This little old man was on such a mission. He was trudging along, face all determined, I couldn't resist taking a sneaky shot. I like the line and contrast in this image, and I think the colours work well together.

Day 29

As you have probably noticed by now, I am a big fan of the more artistic and abstract. This was a long exposure I took of my pool at night. I overlayed several patterns to create this surreal image.

Day 28

Today I photographed Brisbane's St Jerome's Laneway Festival. This is Faris Badwan lead singer of The Horrors. The lighting over the various stages was a bit hit and miss with the dreaded red lighting dominating a lot of the sets. I guess the juxtaposition of this image is what made me post it.

Day 27

I'm falling in love with my macro lens!! This was a long exposure taken at night in my garden. I played around with the colours and contrast so it looks more like a painting (in my opinion) than a photograph.

Day 26

Happy Australia Day!!!! This is my amazing makeup artist Leanne after taking a leisurely swim in the pool. I really like the natural lighting in this image coupled with the soft pastel tones. A hint of Australian pride is peeping through on Leanne's shorts.

Day 25

I took this image of my dear friend Marita during our lunch date. I overlayed a cloud pattern (one of my favourites) then lowered the opacity. I particularly like the green fingernails against the red book and the intensity of the eyes

Day 24

It's been raining heavily on the Gold Coast over the last few days so I thought I would pay homage with a macro water shot. I used the flash on my D7000 along with my macro lens to get a really nice crystal image of falling rain.

Day 23

I spent the entirety of today sifting through almost 3000 images from the Big Day Out. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to be that creative with todays photograph! I have played around with overlaying patterned backgrounds and changing opacities in photoshop.

Day 22

I was lucky enough to shoot the Big Day Out for the second time in a row, last year in Melbourne, this year on the Gold Coast. Not only did I get to shoot in the same pit as the Great music photographer Tony Mott, I also got to photograph one of my favourite bands. The above photograph is in no way the best photograph I took all day however it represents something pretty special to me.

When I was a little 16 year old emo teenager I came across My Chemical Romance and fell in love with their music. Each one of their songs resonated with me on a personal level. I saw them in concert each time they came to Australia queuing for hours just to be near the front of the stage. My walls were adorned with the lead singers face (Gerard Way pictured above) and all my belongings were covered with their merchandise. If I told my teenage self that one day I would be the one taking photographs of the band I loved so much, I would have passed out cold!

Even though nowadays I prefer my music a tad less depressing and slightly more mellow, it was still a buzz to shoot the band I once loved so much.

I'm quite fond of abstract art, especially abstract photography. This was a macro image I took in low lighting. I'll leave to you to decipher what the image is of ;)

Day 20

This is Jenna my subject for todays shoot. I am a massive fan of capturing motion in photographs whilst still being able to see detail. This is easily achievable by an increased shutter speed. Leanne Tucker from Impulse Butterfly helped out on makeup once again. Stay tuned to my Facebook to see more images from Jenna's shoot :)

This is my stunning model Sherie. I did this shoot as a personal project for myself to update my fashion portfolio. There are some stunning images from this shoot so stay tuned to my Facebook page as I will be posting the rest of them in the next week. Leanne Tucker, award winning makeup artist from Impulsive Butterfly did a fabulous job on hair and makeup.

Day 18

This is the Beautiful Leanne whom I photographed for PMA models. It was quite a sunny day so we had to be weary of shadows and direct sunlight. I don't usually like photographing white as it tends to get a tad blown out with the sun. It works wonderfully for this image though, and I particularly like the positioning of her hair.

Day 17

I was lucky enough (insert sarcasm here) to shoot Heatwave festival. Amongst the acts were Kid Cudi, Obi Trice, Crazytown and D12. The arena was pretty much empty and D12 didn't even show up. The lighting and mass amounts of smoke made it near impossible to get a good shot. The image above is of Tech N9ne an American rapper. Paired with his sidekick (some fat dude with an afro) they were the best act of the night.... and that's not saying much. End of rant.

This is Jack, my dad's slightly simple Jack Russell. He has been known to run into walls with his head and is always susceptible to the imaginary ball trick.  This was taken with my macro lens then overlayed with the posterize effect on photoshop.

Day 14

This image is of Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner. I shot their gig at the lovely river stage in Brisbane. I met some friendly fellow photographers and enjoyed the fresh air of the open arena. Worst mosh I have seen in a very long time! I tried to avoid eye contact as much as possible as I walked around in my vast photographers pit seeing squashed limbs and little teenyboppers gasping for air. As soon as the band walked on stage, lack of space was forgotten and a brilliant evening of delightful music was had by all.

Day 12

This photo was taken at the Hifi bar in Brisbane. The very talented musician in this image is Zach Condon, lead singer of Beirut. The thing that I most like about this photo is his tattoo. I think that teamed with his instrument show his obvious love for music. I made it black and white as I feel it is more effective this way.

Day 10

Today we went for a drive to Nimbin. Since the 70s it had been a haven for pot smoking hippies. After 40 years not much had changed. I took this image inside the Nimbin museum where absolutely nothing made sense and the whole place smelled like a giant bong. Due to the extreme left wing nature of the town, I can only take this display of faith as one giant satire. The rest of the museum consisted of lot's of bones, a Kombi van, a million scriptures on why Marijuana should be legalised and a whole lot of love.

I'm not going to lie, today was a slow day. I spent the majority of it in front of my computer catching up on photoshop work and the rest in the pool :p This was taken on my evening stroll, I overlayed patterns and textures for effect.

Day 8

Today we went on a mini roadtrip to O'Reily's Plateau in the mountainous region of the Gold Coast. On the way we picked up a hitchhiker who end up being a paraglider. He had glided down the mountain and was catching a lift back up the mountain to meet his fellow gliders at the pub after a successful day of jumping off mountains. After we dropped our new friend off we continued on our journey. We bumped into a herd of mischievous cattle halfway up the mountain. This cow was looking particularly majestic against the lush backdrop that I couldn't help jump out and take a picture. With the assistance of photoshop I layered some coloured backgrounds and ended up with a rather vintage style image. After hopping back in the car  (managing to avoid running over any cattle) we finally made it up the mountain. We kicked off our shoes, lay on our backs, breathed in the fresh mountain air on a day that could only be described as perfect.

Day 6

I work with a lot of models, especially promotional models. This was the lovely Sarah whom I photographed for PMA Models in Mermaid Beach. I wanted to give this a slight 1960s pinup feel and make the colours a tad washed out. I am a massive fan of vintage and vintage inspired photography.

This photograph was taken at Byron Bay of my talented friend Piera. Her dancing skill and incredible flexibility lent for some beautiful imagery. I really like how her hair has been caught mid turn. I brought out the clarity and contrast in Lightroom, also adding a slight vignette overlay.

Day 4

I really enjoy the effects that can be achieved by overlaying patterns and textures over an otherwise boring image. I took this image of a bar then overlayed clouds over the top, playing around with the contrast. I really like the effect on the chairs, as if you would be sitting on clouds.

Day 3

I've been playing around with my macro lens and having a bit of fun scaring all the bugs in my garden :p I found this tiny dandelion seed head stuck in a cobweb. I'm finding that my macro lens works best on manual focus. The different depths of field achieved by manual focus are a good way to play around and come up with different effects.

Day 2

I recently won a Nikon D7000 (yay!) However being a Canon user with no real knowledge of Nikon SLR functionality, I had ashamedly shunned my new present to the corner for the last few weeks. I finally bought my gadget out to play today, and thinking I had attached the strap correctly (I hadn't) I left the house to take some shots. All was going fine until I walked back to my car (camera over shoulder) and BAM! strap falls off, camera hits the concrete floor. I look down to see battery, memory card, and lens cap flung out and strewn across the floor. Thinking the worst I bend down to pick up my short lived new toy. To my surprise albeit a few scratches, it was perfectly fine!!! A++++ to Nikon for resilience ;) This image was taken with a macro lens (flower head was scarcely bigger than the nail on my pinky finger) I really like the pattern of the rock formation in the background. Usually I am not a fan of noise, although I think it works well for this image.

Day 1

This image of my mother was taken at Broadbeach (Gold Coast) during an afternoon brunch on New Year's Day. In Lightroom I played around with saved presets (which can be found in the quick develop section) There are some fantastic overlays that are a really great shortcut for photographers. Using photoshop I used selective colour (to bring out the blacks and the iris) shadows/highlights, and gaussian blur (on the face so that the eyes appeared to pop more) I then went back to Lightroom to work more on contrast, clarity, and colour resulting in the finished product.
